Made a few upgrades to the GMC this morning. It has been randomly dying on me after driving for a while when it’s hot out. Not overhearting dying, but either fuel pump or ignition related. I have a brand new Holley pump on her, so I was pretty sure it was the ignition coil. I picked up a new MSD and installed it this morning.
I also flushed the coolant system and made a new overflow tank.

Worn out ignition control modules are notorious for crapping out when hot, then firing right back up after they cool.

That’s why I’m thinking it was the problem. Plus the one I pulled out seems to be the original and it was wiggling around in its mount indicated the epoxy had been melting and re hardening. It died on me while driving in rush hour traffic on the freeway the other day and after ten minutes it was back up and running.

came to say the same thing, about the module. good fun beating on it while on the side of the road.
check the pickup coil while in there too.

thats not epoxy. its di-electric grease. it transfers the heat of the module to the body of the distributor. without that paste, the module burns itself up in pretty short order.<<< ask me how i know.

No, the GM HEI ignition coils as filled with heat hesitant epoxy instead of oil. Over time the epoxy breaks down and the coils slowly fail. The whole center of the coils are filled with hardened epoxy.

yeah, youre right.
i think were talking about 2 different things. ignition coil.....vs...... ignition module.
but you are right about that epoxy.

The coil isn’t really an upgrade until you open up the spark plug gaps wider

Yep, I cleaned the plugs and opened up their gaps too.

Yes, I left the stock ignition module in there. It's debatable, but I've heard a lot of people say the stock module is best, and that some of the newer aftermarket ones cause problems. I'll see how this cool does before I screw with it.

I hate it when my ride overhearts. Getting it down off a Corvette is so embarassing.
Also that is perhaps the coolest overflow tank ever.
